CSS 2027 Complete Guide: MPT Date, New Age Limit (35 Years) and Extra Attempt Rules
Last updated: 17 July 2026. FPSC has not issued the official CSS 2027 notice yet. The dates below are expected dates based on last year's schedule. We will update this page the same day the official notice comes out.
If you are planning to sit in CSS 2027, this is the right time to start. Not next month. Now.
Here is why. Last year, FPSC opened MPT applications in the middle of August and gave candidates only two weeks to apply. Many people missed the window simply because they were waiting for "someone to tell them." If the same pattern repeats this year, the CSS 2027 application window will open within the next few weeks.
This guide covers everything in one place: the expected schedule, the new age limit of 35 years, the extra attempt rule, eligibility, and how the MPT actually works.
CSS 2027 Expected Schedule
FPSC follows almost the same calendar every year. Here is what happened in the last cycle, and what you should expect for CSS 2027:
Stage | Last cycle (actual) | CSS 2027 (expected) |
|---|---|---|
MPT public notice | 10 August | Around mid August 2026 |
MPT application window | 11 to 25 August | Second half of August 2026 |
MPT exam | 9 November | November 2026 |
Written exam notice | 14 December | December 2026 |
Written exam applications | 15 to 30 December | Late December 2026 |
Written exam starts | 4 February | February 2027 |
Two things to note here. First, the application window is short, usually about two weeks. Second, FPSC itself says the schedule is provisional, which means dates can shift. Do not fully rely on any website, including ours. When the notice comes, confirm it on fpsc.gov.pk.
The Big Change: Age Limit Is Now 35 Years
This is the change everyone is talking about, and it is real.
The National Assembly approved an increase in the upper age limit for CSS from 30 to 35 years, effective from 2026 onwards. So if you crossed 30 and thought your CSS dream was over, it is not. You now have five extra years.
The lower age limit remains 21 years.
One important detail: your age is not counted on the day you apply. FPSC counts age on a fixed cutoff date mentioned in the notice, which in past years has been 31 December of the year before the exam. For CSS 2027, that would most likely mean your age on 31 December 2026. A few months here and there can decide whether you are eligible or not, so calculate it properly. We wrote a full guide on this: How to calculate your exact age for government jobs in Pakistan.
Government servants also get the usual age relaxation of 2 years on top, subject to the conditions in the notice.
Extra Attempt Rule
Along with the age limit, candidates are now allowed one extra attempt. Earlier the limit was three attempts. With the new rule, candidates get an additional chance.
What does this mean practically? If you used all your attempts before and were sure you were out of the race, read the official CSS 2027 notice carefully when it drops. The exact wording of the rule in the notice will decide who benefits from the extra attempt. We will explain the notice in plain words here as soon as it is published.
Who Can Apply for CSS 2027
The basic eligibility has not changed:
Pakistani citizen
Bachelor's degree with at least second division from a recognized university
Age between 21 and 35 years on the cutoff date (with the new limit)
Attempts remaining as per the rules above
Final year students should note that the degree must be complete before the cutoff mentioned in the notice, not before the interview. Check this point in the official notice, because it catches people every year.
What Is the MPT and Why Most People Fail It
CSS is now a two stage exam.
Stage one is the MPT, the MCQ Based Preliminary Test. It is a screening test. Only those who pass the MPT can apply for the written exam. Stage two is the famous written exam with essay, precis and subject papers.
The MPT is a multiple choice paper covering English, general ability (basic maths and reasoning) and general knowledge, which includes Pakistan affairs, current affairs, everyday science and Islamic studies. The exact paper breakdown and qualifying marks are given in each year's notice, so confirm them there.
Here is the honest truth about the MPT. It is not a hard test for someone who prepares for eight to ten weeks. But every year thousands of candidates fail it because they treat it casually and start preparing after the notice comes out. By then they only have about two and a half months.
If you start in July, you get a full four months before the expected November MPT. That is a huge advantage.
A simple MPT plan that works:
July and August: Build your base. One general knowledge book, one basic maths and reasoning book, and daily newspaper reading for current affairs.
September: Start solving past MPT papers. FPSC repeats question styles.
October: Timed practice. Full mock tests twice a week.
First week of November: Revision only. No new topics.
Written Exam Structure (Quick Overview)
Since this guide is about getting you into the race, here is only a short summary of stage two. The written exam carries 1200 marks in total. Half of it (600 marks) comes from six compulsory papers, and the other half from optional subjects you choose yourself.
The six compulsory papers are:
Paper | Marks |
|---|---|
English Essay | 100 |
Precis and Composition (English) | 100 |
General Science and Ability | 100 |
Current Affairs | 100 |
Pakistan Affairs | 100 |
Islamic Studies * | 100 |
*Non Muslim candidates can choose Comparative Study of Major Religions instead.
To pass, you need 40 percent in each compulsory paper, 33 percent in optional papers, and 50 percent aggregate. After the written exam come the medical test, psychological assessment and interview.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Waiting for the notice to start preparing. The two week application window is for applying, not preparing. People who start after the notice are already behind.
Wrong age calculation. Every year applications get rejected over the cutoff date. Calculate your age on the expected cutoff date today, not on your birthday.
Ignoring the challan and document requirements. Keep your CNIC, degree, domicile and photographs ready in advance. Fee payment issues near the deadline are one of the most common reasons people miss out.
Relying on WhatsApp forwards for dates. Fake schedules circulate every year. Trust only fpsc.gov.pk and cross check anything you read anywhere else, including here.
